Rev. Fred H. Cowles Baptist pastor in Bedford spoke at the regular chapel in BHS auditorium on January 26 on the subject A Christian Foundation using Matthew 7 from the Bible. Supt. R. F. Van Dyke led the hymns with Evelyn Russell on piano. Twenty BHS students begin the second semester driver training three class periods daily.
Bedford high school students will sign up for elective subjects earlier this year. Supt. R F P Van Dyke says freshmen to juniors will choose electives for next year's term this April. Parents will be interested in the advance notice as subjects become available.
Irene Brown a BHS commercial teacher is the new secretary of the Bedford Education Association succeeding Deane Newman. She was appointed by President Ralph Balster. She will check the roll prepare financial reports and handle routine duties for the local teachers organization.
Bedford High School Hi Y Chapter with advisor Mr Robert Dun can attended the January 23 Sunday morning service at the Methodist church observing National Y M C A Week. Members present include Allen Akers Dale Beaver Eddie Ingram Joe Gunson Don Murphy Bol Murphy and Lowell Weir.
Bedford Grade School adds two new instructors this month. Mrs Lois Coulter takes second grade after Mrs Newman resigned, a Bedford native with degrees from Northwest Missouri State College. Miss Mary Lou Hedstrom fills third grade, graduating from Villisca High School and earning an elementary education certificate at Northwest Missouri State College.
BHS enrollment figures at the end of the first semester show a net gain of two students and a loss of four. Transfers into BHS include Martha John from Lenox and Barbara Thomas from Conway. Transfers out go to Abraham Lincoln in Council Bluffs, New Market, Eldon, and Follett.
Five students from Mrs. Kirketey's history classes presented a panel for the Women's Legion Auxiliary at Lancille Livingston's home on Wednesday January 17. Moderator Jon Crum led discussion on co existence with Communists as Barbara Snyder spoke on how the Legion works with Congress. John Guenth er discussed Indonesia and a hot spot in the world. Charles Cumberlin covered Universal Military Training and Roger Reith spoke on Governor Leo Hoegh's speech.
Principal Roy Reith announced the junior high honor roll for the third six weeks ending January 14. Eighth grade B averages include Ronald Beaver Jeanette Cheers Elaine Cummings Janet Gunson Larry Hatfield Ju va Henry Wanda McNutt. Seventh grade B averages list Greg Guenther Jan Johnson Ann Livingston Larry McGee Harold Shepherd Evelyn Spencer and Sharon Underwood.
Three BHS seniors Norma Fine Judith Mendenhall and Paul Jones lead a ten day magazine drive to fund senior class projects. As of January 26 sales totaled 215 toward a 600 quota. Judith Mendenhall's team sold 123 last week. Top two sellers are Dave Thompson 43 and Ramon Moore with unknown amount.
The Future Farmers of America chapter at Bedford High voted to invest about 300 dollars in purebred Tamworth gilts. The animals will be awarded to FFA members on a share basis who submit essays on how they would care for the purebred pigs.
Duane Hunter Bruce Sleep Lyn dell Streebin and Biyverett Tribo jet named to organize awards. March gifts funded to foster purebred livestock. the gilt share agreement makes the recipient keep the animal if cared for and return gilts based on litter size including barrows and gilts.
The undersigned Gordon C. Hill and Ralph C. Jones declare the appointment of administrator for the estate of William Joseph Waterman, deceased, Taylor County. John Elmer Sickels born January 1886 near Athelstan Iowa died January 19 1955 aged 69 and 14 days. He married Grace Fiuke February 17 1909. children include Paul M Sickels Helen Miller Lois Bauman Gene B Sickels Lyte W Sickels Joe J Sickels. He leaves grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral held January 1955 at Community church Athelstan with burial in Athelstan cemetery New Market.
H S Lathrop Harley Irwin Lathrop born December 6 1867 at Oxford Mills Iowa died January 8 1955 in Oakland California aged 87 years one month two days. Third son in a family of 12 with three brothers and one sister deceased. Member of Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges.
The obituary notes a man from California who worked as a hotel clerk and who later lived with his sister and Mr Balk in Oakland. His ashes will go to Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda for burial beside his brother Ernest in Dallas Center Cemetery, Dallas Township. Services are postponed due to distant relatives.
A Federal complaint in Akron Ohio charges Dye born July 5 1910 Pad WV with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for armed robbery. Dye described 44 years old 510 with brown hair blue eyes medium build scar markings and a tattoo initials CD on forearm. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous. Contact FBI with information.
