BCHS commercial instructor Mrs. Alice Mansfield addressed the Bed ford Hi Y on dating and social poise. She urged relaxation, proper conduct, questions, corsages, and the duties of a gentleman to make dates memorable. Her guidance stressed maturity, character, and respect as keys to appealing, honorable behavior.
The 1961 BCHS senior class attended the Bedford Federation of Women's Clubs gathering in the library basement. Shenandoah student Susan Vaughn spoke about Norway and the American Field Service. Shenandoah's Mrs. Carole Johnson, president of the local AFS chapter, joined the event along with seniors and a male trio providing music.
The BCHS 44 member marching band wore black uniforms with purple and white trim and purple plumed hats during a daytime parade in the Bedford business district. Instructor Michael Waters noted the event publicized last weekend’s state music contest.
Max D. Carpenter outlines his casting method for BCHS plays. He reads lines in tryouts and judges by size, appearance, personality, attitude, and prior high school roles. When tied, the less experienced student gets the part to develop hidden talent. He urges all students to participate in speech or drama.
Fugitivo led the final week with La Luna Azue and Angel Sobre Mi Espalda tied for third. Rana and Sobre La Repercion tied for fourth. Alan Byers topped male singers with Ricky Nelson second. Con stanzita Francis led female vocalists with Brenda Lee second.
Friday and Saturday April 28-29 feature a small group music contest at Corning. May 1 2 pm Pre-school Round-Up at Blockton and May 2 2 pm at Bedford with Blue Jay Relays at Villisca. May 3 2 pm Preschool Round-Up at Gravity and 8 pm FHA meeting. May 6 includes Boys Sec tional Baseball tournament and an Iowa High School Press Association Workshop at Lamon. May 7 BCHS Band Concert at 3 pm. May 8 semi final sectional baseball and May 10 final sectional baseball. May 12 Junior Senior Prom.
Weldon Sundell BCHS instructor reports shorthand I class rankings by Gregg Publishing tests. Students succeed at two three and five minute dictations at speeds from 60 to 120 wpm with 95 percent transcription accuracy. Several named students achieved 80 wpm or 100 wpm targets and more may reach 100 wpm by term end.
Dr Leon Mill installs Peggy Neil 1961-62 president and Nan Van Dyke chapter officers at a Bedford Future Teachers of America meeting in the BCHS lunchroom. NWMSC Dean Dr Miller spoke on Opportunities for Quality Teachers and income gains for graduates.
Fourteen BCHS students perform as soloists at the small group state contest in Corning on April 28 29. The schedule runs Friday into Saturday with solos across clarinets flutes alto clarinet bass clarinet cornet baritone alto saxophone French horn and piano.
