Pennsylvania Republicans hold a second face to face session with Sen. Robert A. Taft in Hershey to acquaint delegates and alternates with the Ohio candidate. Gov. Fine reports 96 acceptances as Taft stresses clear positions.
Three Pennsylvanian Dutch farmers retraced their 450 mile ancestral migration from Lancaster Pennsylvania to Waterloo Ontario. Loren Weber Azie Martin and Elias Brubaker in a 1 5 year old wagon drawn by two horses were greeted by City Treasurer Bernard J Bird and travelled toward Niagara Falls to promote a six day Mennonite celebration starting June 30 in Waterloo.
A hearing on the fate of the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad will be held in Lewisburg on July 2 before Federal Judge Frederick Follmer. Backers will present their reorganization plan while a Washington DC bondholder seeks scrapping the line. Local fund raising aims to raise 100000 from Bedford and Huntingdon counties to prove community support, though success by deadline is uncertain. Carl Bradley leads the drive with Stanley Stroup of Bedford as counsel. Glenn Troutman will represent the railroad. Continued on page 3.

A five member committee was appointed to draft a final contract for a Bedford area joint school system. The plan, approved earlier, will be presented for final acceptance on Monday night, June 30. The meeting covered debt retention, property maintenance, and the cost for a new Bedford Township elementary school addition, with about 2200 pupils expected in grades 1 through 12.

State College Pennsylvania June 23 AFL Pennsylvania Federation of Labor officials heard economist Arthur H. Reede warn that removing all price controls would trigger real inflation. He spoke at the third annual labor institute before about 75 local AFL union leaders.
Washington June 23 Federal Security Administrator Oscar R Ewing asked Congress to pass a student aid bill funding scholarships up to 1000 a year for about 50000 to 60000 high school students to reach college and offering loans up to 600 a year or 2400 total with 20 of loan insured by government. The program aims to open college doors for those blocked by cost and would cost about 32 million in year one rising to 124 million annually. President Truman included a 30 million start in his January budget. The measure targets the neediest yet brightest students as urged by the Presidents Commission on Higher Education.
In Frankfurt Germany on June 23 Allied and Soviet notes clashed over Germany. Western Big Three accused Russia of blocking patrols on the Berlin interstate route and violating four power accords. East Germany charged West Germany with arming, and Potsdam treaty breaches were denied by allied and West German officials. A British protest over German rail workers seized by Russian and East German police followed. West German Socialists said they would present evidence to the UN on evictions of East German families from the Soviet frontier zone.
In Munsan Korea on Tuesday June 24 delegates at Panmunjom confronted new screenings of 45,000 Communist prisoners on Koje Island. The move sharpens the dispute over prisoner exchanges central to stalled armistice talks. North Korea’s Nam Il condemned UN plans to release 27,000 South Korean civilians and rejected unilateral prisoner reclassification.
A pedestrian and a truck driver were killed and three others injured in a Route BW collision two miles east of Painesville Ohio. The victims were Thomas O Brien of Newfane New York the truck driver, and William Martin Gance of Lewistown Pennsylvania who was waiting for a ride. Gance worked for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in Painesville.
The Senate rejected a move to force a showdown on barring presidential seizure of private property without Congress consent. Vote 42 to 32, with Democrats largely united and Republicans largely opposing. McCarran’s constitutional amendment would limit executive power over property takings to actions authorized by Congress. The clash with Majority Leader McFarland reflected a heated leadership dispute over timetabling and rule concessions.
A 22 year old Waynesburg College student, James Decker of Washington, was sentenced for burglary after a judge delayed a jail term to allow him to graduate. He admitted taking jewelry, old coins and stamps worth $2,000 from the Weinrichs’ apartment on January 5.
Harrisburg June 23 Governor John S Fine personally recruited Miss Mary Nicco a 20 year old Philadelphia stenographer winner of a national contest to serve as The Ideal White Collar Girl of America for Pennsylvania Week in October she promised to be on hand this year
General Dwight D. Eisenhower told a national audience that a retreat to isolationism would leave an exposed America surrounded by a "savage wolf pack" of Communists. He promoted a four point program for security and peace, framing his remarks as a contrast with Senator Robert A. Taft's foreign policy.
The Pennsylvania State College trustees and American Legion state commander say no subversives are on the staff after a months long inquiry. They vow dismissal if any subversive is found under the Loyalty Act or other means. The joint statement praises the college for keeping subversive influence out.
Federal Judge Wallace S. Gourley sentenced 19 year old Dorothy L. McCandress of Butter to five years imprisonment. Three men and a girl who stole 425 from the National Bank of Brookville May 6 were sentenced to prison.
Allied warplanes crippled the Manchurian industry by bombing the Suiho Dam complex and four other power centers on the Korean side of the Yalu River. The raid, involving over 500 fighter bombers from the U.S. Air Force Navy and Marines, left Pyongyang without power and damaged several Communist targets in North Korea and Manchuria. The Air Force reported no plane losses. the Navy said one plane was shot down and four hit, with no lost pilots.
Washington reports that government attorney Ernest L. Branham accused the Justice Department of a whitewash in the 1949 anti trust probe of the liquor industry. He said he refused a memorandum and faced intimidation. Former official Herbert Bergson denied political contributions killed the 1948 whiskey inquiry. Hodges rebutted Branham’s statements as false during testimony.
Oil City prepares a July 4 welcome for jet ace Col Frances Gabreski arriving July 3 on rotation. The Korean and World War II ace, assigned to Northern Air Force Base San Bernardino, has 31 kills in WWII and six and a half planes in Korea. He will inspect jet fighter crashes.
Two sisters Muriel Panz burn aged 13 and Rose Marie aged 9 drowned today in the swift waters of French Creek sixteen miles southwest of Corry as their aunt and uncle watched helplessly from the bank. The incident occurred in the creek near Corry with the moment confirmed by local authorities.
New York harbor gave a record welcome to the luxury liner United States as she moved to her West 46th Street pier after a shakedown from Newport News. The 53,500-ton ship, cost 73 million dollars, drew blimps planes and water cannons while harbor crowds cheered and ticker tape showered the streets.
Five persons were injured in a one mile west of Everett on the Pennsylvania Turnpike accident. Lewis Thompson, 40, of Wei was driving a GMC west and skidded into the guard rails. Passengers Theodore Harvard, 36, Evi Thompson, 19, Arthur Thompson, 15, and Tobe Thompson, 42, suffered chest, neck, and brain injuries with varying contusions or fractures. All were admitted to Memorial Hospitals in fair condition. Thompson the driver was treated and discharged. Damages exceeded 700 dollars.
