An East Coast seamen strike by 28000 CIO NMU sailors eases as they approve a contract with East and Gulf coast liners. They must not sail until three smaller unions settle, while a guaranteed wage plan funds unemployment insurance with 25 cents per day per seaman.
The Senate approved the treaty by a two thirds margin to restore Austria’s sovereignty. Republicans Jenner Malone McCarthy opposed. Mahoney called Russia’s actions robbery. Debate spanned hours with bipartisan support, noting Britain France and Russia must also ratify. Document signed in Vienna May 15 and set to proceed to further ratifications.
The forecast calls for continued fair and warm conditions today and tomorrow. High temperatures are expected to be moderate with pleasant evenings and no significant precipitation.

The Bedford Lions Club Learn to Swim program begins Monday June 20 at 3am with a bus trip from South Elementary at 9 am returning at 11 30. Classes at Red Oaks Lake, lent by Don Shoemaker, are for preschool and up to Senior Life Saving with daily lessons on weekdays. Last year average attendance was 28 children.
New York reports the Western Big Three ended two days of high level talks with renewed hope for progress toward peace. They issued a communique noting plans for a summit with Russia at Geneva in July and backing Adenauer’s Moscow trip.
In London on June 17 a British seamen strike boosted air travel with chartered planes and scheduled liners filling for New York, enabling hundreds of Americans stranded at Southampton and Liverpool docks to return home. Eight ships remain strike-bound, including the Queen Mary, while air lines expect to move a majority of residents over the next week with savings on fare and tips.
Clarence Reichard of Allentown was nominated Friday for the presidency of Pennsylvania's Exchange Clubs. He will succeed Joseph Gatens of Norristown as head of the 59 service clubs in the state. Nominations were at the State Exchange Club convention at Bedford Springs Hotel. Other officers named include Myron Roon Je y of Aliquippa as vice president Oliver Smith of Lancaster as secretary and Norman Haas of Philadelphia as treasurer. Six board members were named: William M. Marr Reading R. F Moore Waynesboro O Orrin Kipp Johnstown Charles L. Mier Erie and Charles Sames Fountain.
Uniontown reports the Catholic War Veterans of Pennsylvania adopted a resolution urging amendment of the state penal code to provide life imprisonment for three felonies. Delegates approved it during a four day annual convention which ends tomorrow with officer elections and a banquet.
Pope Pius XII met with two Buenos Aires prelates after their expulsion by President Peron sparked protests and street fighting. The Vatican described the expulsion as brutal and urged unity among the Argentine church and faithful.
President Eisenhower relaxed at his country home after overseeing Operation Alert a three day evacuation drill involving 15 000 federal workers. He urged daily prayers to prevent a disaster like the simulated attack and planned to stay at the farm until Sunday before returning to Washington for a trip to San Francisco and a UN ceremony.
New York June 17 A court order requires Minot F. Jelke known as Mickey 25 oleo margarine heir to be moved to Sing Sing prison Monday to begin a two to three year term for compulsory prostitution. Generals Sessions Judge Francis L Valente denied bail pending appeal and Jelke’s attorney said no further release moves would be made.
Joseph J. Bruno, once a Verona taxi driver, asked U S District Court to end his five year probation for attempting to extort 6200 from baseball star Ralph Kiner. He now says he is a licensed actors agent and travels, requiring court permission under probation terms.
Washington reports Russia expelled three American Army officers attached to the U S Embassy in Moscow for alleged improper activities. Lt Col John S Benson Capt William R Stroud and Capt Walter Mule left the Soviet Union as they were declared persona non grata. The move sharpens U S Soviet diplomatic tensions and could invite U S retaliation against Soviet diplomats.
President Eisenhower concluded Operation Alert from a secret post calling for prayers and swift congressional approval of a military reserve program. He warned disaster must never come to the United States and urged action on reserve bills, noting Senate and House disputes over race segregation in reserves and the National Guard.
Hubert Hine, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Hine of Bedford, has won a Foreign Service Officer appointment with the United States State Department. He will travel to Hong Kong to begin duties at the US Embassy in the Security 2nd Investigations Organization of the Refugee Relief Program. A 1948 Bedford High School graduate, Hine served in Air Force intelligence during the Korean War, studied languages at Yale, and earned a language degree. He was reported the only Bedford countian recently named to the Foreign Service and is visiting family before leaving for Washington.
Montevideo Uruguay June 17 Argentine President Juan Peron urged calm after Thursday revolt in Buenos Aires. He blamed Communists for church attacks, said his clash with the Church hierarchy was not against religion. Reports say 346 wounded, 96 grave. La Nación cites 360 deaths. Uruguayan airfields housed 39 rebel Argentine navy planes and 122 exiles. Secret broadcasts claim navy revolt in three cities. Seven churches attacked. fighting near Government House wounded about 1,000. A bomb shattered windows at the British Embassy.
Los Angeles June 17. Kefauver subcommittee assails a near pornographic movie advertisement featuring Lana Turner in a seminude pose. Gordon White, head of the Motion Picture Advertising Code, testifies about the Prodigal poster and defends retouched artwork with panties painted on Turner.
