The Commonwealth faces a historic funding package to cover a 24 month period for state operations, higher education, and agencies. lawmakers in recess as the governor signs the measure and plans expect first payments by late January pending a tax program. The state owes 3461 school districts and may borrow from highway funds to meet urgent needs.
Karlsruhe Germany Dec 22 The South German radio reports former West German security chief Dr Otto John has been charged with treason after returning from the Communist East on Dec 12 after 16 months away An examining Supreme Court judge questioned him to determine grounds for treason charges A warrant was served due to risk he might flee or conceal activities The West German government branded him a traitor in his absence and Bonn faces scrutiny over the case.
A car blaze near Bedford county Memorial hospital caused minor damage to the vehicle. A gasoline soaking bucket caught fire at the Webster Foot garage in Clear Creek. Everett Volunteer fire company answered alarms around 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
In Chicago on December 22 the blonde Andrews sisters, head joined twins who survived a separation operation, celebrated their first public appearance. The 14 month old sisters, blue-eyed and in red play outfits with red caps, posed for photographers after returning from Mercy Hospital. They were separated in a 312 hour operation on April 21.

United Nations in New York heard Syria’s Ahmed Shukairy present a resolution to expel Israel from the U.N. and impose economic penalties for an attack near the Sea of Galilee. Israeli Abba Eban urged a demand that Syria halt interference with Israeli activity on the sea. the Security Council adjourned with no action and may reconvene in January.
Reports say a partial uprising involved cavalry units and parts of Asuncion police but collapsed after dawn. The government issued a calm communique stressing tranquility and continuity with the Colorado Party while noting no fighting occurred and no further violence was reported.
United Telephone Company of Pennsylvania plans a six mile line from the Maryland border along the Upper Valley road to Bean's Cove, linking with Chesapeake and Potomac wires into Cumberland. Service expected by June or July 1956 with 22 phones ordered. State Line exchange will set rates by airline distance and connect to Charlesville and Cumberland. Engineering surveying begun, construction to start after January.
A New Enterprise man identified as S. C. Imler, 44, was slightly injured and his 1935 Plymouth totaled when he rear ended a tractor trailer on Route 30 west of Bedford at 8:15 p.m. The truck, a Wilson outfit driven by Glenn J. Greenwood, 31, of Everett, suffered no damage. Imler was treated at Memorial Hospital for contusions and a lip laceration. no charges were filed as police continue investigation near Bald Hill.
Norfolk, December 22 Senator Estes Kefauver said it would be tragic if the public school system in the South was destroyed or damaged to avert racial integration. He called the Supreme Court ruling unanimous against enforced segregation and urged time and patience to work out the problem and for the races to cooperate.
Upwards of a thousand children from the Everett area are expected at the annual Red Men Christmas Party at the Everett Theatre this afternoon. The event starts at 1 p.m. A free showing of selected motion pictures will entertain the kids and a treat will be provided. Santa will be present.
Public and civic groups distributed toys clothing and food to about 165 needy children across Bedford County. Child Welfare Services coordinated gifts for 42 foster children and 16 in county institutions while various groups aided 37 state police 13 Rotary 15 20th Century Club and 3 youth fellowship children.
