Admiral Forrest Sherman arrives in Washington with plans for a European defense army commanded by General Dwight D. Eisenhower from a London conference. Eisenhower's final confirmation as commander in chief hinges on a session of North Atlantic Treaty nations delegates next week.
Everett youngsters up to 14 will enjoy a free cowboy movie and treats at the Everett Theatre Friday afternoon at 1 30 oclock. Wambie Tribe Improved Order of Redmen with Theodore Grance and the Everett School Board arrange the event for boys and girls of Everett and vicinity.
Oil drill at New Paris wildcat well Jesse Miller No 1 near 9000 feet as company officials withhold depth plans. Robert Coyle of Scheilsbuie Lore man leads the operation noting steady progress and fewer slowdowns than earlier. No word on how deep South Penn Oil Co will drill if needed.
American Legion Auxiliary units held a Christmas party for about 90 hospitalized veterans at Altoona Hospital. The program featured vocal solos, tap dances, musical numbers, and magician acts led by Doc Dibelt with guitarist Raymond Whetstone. Gifts and donations were shared by Bedford and Everett unit members, including socks, cards, prizes, magazines, and cookies. Patients from Bedford County now hospitalized included Ross Miller and Charles Dodson.
Edward J. Bittner aged 40 of Cumberland remained in serious condition in an oxygen tent at Timmins hospital after a Pennsylvania Turnpike crash yesterday morning. He rear ended Hatlon Vetter of Philadelphia who drove a tractor trailer in the westbound lane. Vehicle damage totaled about 2000 for Bittner and 510 for the truck. The other driver was lightly injured. Another car driven by Esther Robbins of Richmond overturned on the Turnpike west of Bedford after a tire blew out. She was not injured and escaped.
Lester Houck of Bedford Road engaged in cleaning a chimney when Bedford fire trucks rushed to the scene. Neighbors mistook the operation for a real fire and called the department. firefighters praised the chimney cleaning and left.
United Nations negotiators have appealed directly to Peiping for a meeting to discuss a Korea cease-fire. Lester B. Pearson told the 60 member Assembly committee the reply is not yet ruled out. The cease-fire trio, Rau and Entezam, await a Chinese response while Wu Hsiu Chuan’s team has refused formal talks. Continued on Page 2.
Democratic senators, 44 present, voted to send a resolution demanding full details of the Truman Attlee talks to a foreign relations committee. Three Republicans joined, while 29 Republicans voted against. Senator McKellar urged both parties to unite behind the President and government.
Bedford hosts a gala Community Christmas party for all school youngsters tomorrow night at 7 o clock in Bedford High School.
County communities may need to modify fire alarms to avoid clashing with National Civil Defense air raid signals. Red Alert will use varying pitch signals, while Air Raid Clear features three one minute blasts. Local officials, led by Hyndman’s E Bush, plan adjusted signals to prevent confusion as federal guidance urges nationwide use of the standard code.

A Blair County team from Morrison Cove High School won first place in a statewide Future Homemakers of America kitchen planning contest. Betty Lou Smith Margaret Ching and Dors Stonebrook designed the winning kitchen and will receive cash awards at the fair show next month. Second place went to Bethel Township FHA members in Fredericksburg and Arleen Wagner of Logantown Clinton County finished third.
Employees of the G. C. Murphy stores in Everett and Bedford received annual Christmas gifts as a bonus. The scheme excludes officers and executives and requires 20 hours weekly and six months service. Qualifying staff with 15 or more years get up to 80 dollars, with several thousand workers across 279 stores receiving about 20,000 dollars in gifts.

The unified force would total 55 to 60 divisions with about 2,000,000 men, with Britain possibly providing an armored division and the United States targeting two to five divisions within a year. Dwight D. Eisenhower is expected to be commander with a British and French deputy noted among potential choices.
President Truman asked Congress to restore key World War II powers to speed mobilization. He seeks quick legislation reviving authority from Titles One and Two of the 1941 War Powers Act to disestablish, consolidate, transfer or abolish federal agencies and to modify contracts to prevent undue production delays.
Washington reports a White House arranged late night session on the railroad wage dispute led by Dr John R Steelman. negotiators met after hours to discuss 48 hours pay for 40 and wage goals for engineers and firemen, with progress noted though no settlement announced. Voluntary enlistments surged nationwide, catching recruiting offices off guard before Christmas. Navy recruitment rose four to fivefold in some cities while air force and army efforts more than doubled. In Salt Lake City, Army and Navy quotas hit 200 percent and the Air Force 300 percent, as young men rushed to enlist rather than wait.
Alfred Berghoss, 23, son of a famed WWI draft dodger, pleaded guilty to dodging the 1550 draft. The son was arrested Dec. 1 after writing the draft board that he would not report for physical examination or induction.

Leaders hope to send the measure to the White House before Christmas and iron out House Senate differences in conferences Friday.
The House and Armed Services Committee unanimously cleared the Civil Defense Bill for passage before Christmas. The Senate Armed Services Committee also reached unanimous agreement on a similar measure and plans to send it to the floor. Representative Vinson, chair, scheduled the House bill for passage Wednesday as a national emergency remains in effect and the measure is expected to cost at least $3.1 billion over the next period.
