Allied warplanes from four nations blasted Pyongyang in a frenzied assault, logging 1,403 sorties in 26 months of war. Reports say 55 buildings destroyed, 44 damaged, 23 gun emplacements ruined, and 597 tons of bombs dropped on the capital.
Dr Frederick Foster 53 head of biology at Franklin and Marshall College was found dead by his son in the basement of his Lancaster home. Lancaster coroner ruled death by own action. Foster native of Bedford county founded residence in Lancaster after leaving the county.
West Berlin police arrested 30 communists at a funeral in the French sector for disturbing the peace during memorial services for Friedrich Schoenherr. Authorities said the mourners remained quiet during the service but shouted anti West insults after it ended, prompting dispersal by police with clubs.

Representatives of Eastern railroads and 17 non-operating rail unions agreed to a union shop requiring employees to join labor organizations. The deal follows a government board recommendation for compulsory union membership across U S railroads. Talks with Western carriers paused. The 17 unions represent about one million workers, with Eastern carriers employing around 400,000 of them.

The 205-foot U S Navy tug Sarsi struck a mine off the east coast of North Korea at midnight Wednesday and sank within 20 minutes. Two crew members were killed and three are missing, the Navy announced.
Walter Becker editor of the Communist daily Our Day was arrested today in Mainz on treasonable activity charges. The arrest came as ordered by the Federal Court in Karlsruhe and announced by Rheinland-Pfalz Interior Ministry.

Moslem prayers of gratitude rose in Lebanese mosques as the U S airlift rescued 3 763 pilgrims to Mecca for Id Al Adha. U S Air Force C 54s ferried worshippers from Beirut to Jidda, then to Mecca. The operation boosted Arab goodwill toward the United States amid tensions over Israel. The mufti ordered prayers for Americans in all mosques during the festival. Crews, working 18 hours daily, completed 75 flights covering 121 800 miles.
Carl Herried, 75, a salesman, admits entering Vernon County Memorial Hospital and shooting his wife Dolly, 68, to keep her from a mental institution. He was arraigned in Circuit Court, held without bond, waived preliminary examination, and gave a signed statement to authorities. A mute paralytic was in the same room during the incident.
