A Bedford crowd gathered at the fair grounds for a Safe and Sane Fourth with ample shade seating water and parking. Home talent provided entertainment aside from Sheriff Robb’s evening address, described as a community folk gathering and hailed as the best celebration in forty years.
A Sunday baseball game between Corning and Bedford devolved into three free for all arguments over decisions during play. Complaints over batting out of order, a spectator throwing the ball back, and a Bedford player’s supposed trick prompted wild shouts from visiting fans and led to a general loss of decorum. Officials and attendees failed to resolve tensions swiftly, tarnishing both Sunday and weekday baseball reputations.
The crowd roared as Dempsey entered the ring last Saturday in Jersey City while challenger Carpentier drew later cheers from a cosmopolitan audience. The article extols Dempsey as a popular, war-hero figure and devoted family man.
