In Iowa Falls on February 18 a funeral for E. Ellsworth drew several thousand mourners. Delegations from many towns attended, two special trains arrived from Eldora and the north, and the services at the Metropolitan Opera House drew a large audience.
Washington reports the Iowa delegation again failed to reach any agreement on federal patronage after a one hour session. After March 4 no further test was planned, with doubts remaining about an after March 4 resolution. New candidates for the northern district marshalship surfaced including M. J. Tobin of Vinton Ed Knott of Waverly and W. M. Law of Waterloo. No candidates were named for collectorships, as terms are indefinite and changes depend on displacing Archie Smith.
A bill to protect employee safety on railroads, limiting workers hours, was amended and sent to conference with a two thirds vote required. The measure aims to strengthen protections for railroad employees amid travel and work conditions debates.
In Washington on February 18, Republican Whip H. Watson of Indiana declared confidence in whipping the immigration measure through the House. An hour’s conference solidified support for adopting the bill with amendments including labor provisions. The group agreed to take up the hours of railroad employees and proceed with the immigration bill.
In Washington on February 19 the President and Speaker Cannon met with Representative Watson to discuss measures toward passing the ship subsidy. The talks focused on unifying support and outlining steps for legislative action.
