New York June 29 The Mation steel crisis nears a climax as negotiators remain deadlocked over a wage contract with a midnight deadline tomorrow. United Steel Workers president David J. McDonald reports no progress while plants cool furnaces nationwide and industry losses run into millions.
In Rosbury Connecticut on June 29 playright Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe spoke about their planned wedding after witnessing a fatal car crash. They arrived late for a press conference and declined to specify a date or place, saying the world would be told when it happens.
American actress Marilyn Monroe and playwright Arthur Miller were secretly married in White Plains City Hall by City Judge Seymour Rabinowitz. Reporters and photographers chased them for a week, but the couple slipped away for a private ceremony.
Miller and Miss Monroe were en route to the playwright's house when a follow car crashed into a tree. Mara Sherbatoff, Paris Match New York bureau chief, died at New Milford Hospital. Ira Slade of New York was injured. Monroe waited at the future groom's home for a press conference attended by photographers.
Charles Krauser known as Mr California was found guilty of simple assault on Mickey Hargitay in a scuffle at Mae Wests nightclub. Jury took 15 minutes. Sentencing postponed until September 20. potential fine up to 1000 and a year in jail. Bond set at 300. A $100000 damage suit against West and Krauser remains pending.
The market closed with a mixed pattern in New York on June 29. Aluminum and aircraft stocks led gains amid broader uncertainty and uneven price movements elsewhere.

Dr Gordon M Meade named clinical director for United Mine Workers new chain of 10 hospitals in a Beckley W Va ceremony. The Republican women held a regional meeting attended by about 40 women from six counties with workshops on organizing clubs and campaigning in the southern part of the state. Three GOP candidates for state offices spoke including John A Fielded for attorney general B B Steve Millhouse for Congress and Holt Byrne for secretary of state. Mrs Ted Kessinger chaired the Raleigh County GOP Women meeting.
President Eisenhower, described as highly pleased, signs the 33 billion dollar highway construction bill. Secretary Weeks says funds will start flowing within minutes, creating up to 630000 jobs in peak periods, boosting safety, reducing jams, and spurring business along routes while some existing businesses may be relocated.

Simon E Sobeloff's nomination to the 4th Circuit faced a long battle after the Senate Judiciary Committee approved it 8 2 with Southerners opposing over views on school integration. The Baltimore Republican has been blocked previously by Eastland and Johnston, and South Carolina seeks representation on the court.

Washington June 20 President Eisenhower accepted with deep regret the resignation of Dr Leonard A Scheele surgeon general of the U S Public Health Service effective Aug 1. Scheele a Fort Wayne Indiana native was sworn in April 16 this year for his third four year term. He cited the need to provide more property for his family security and his plans beyond the post remain undisclosed. The President praised his long service and contribution to better health, noting no reference to the Salk polio vaccine controversy in the resignation letter.
Hazel Hambrick is reported in critical condition after a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was moved from Oak Hill Hospital to Beckley Hospital where surgery was performed. Otho Davis, who allegedly shot her, was jailed and later transferred to Fayetteville. a malicious assault charge may be heard Saturday morning.
A 67-year-old Bluefield father, Mack D. Davis, was killed in a collision on U. S. 460 one mile east of Bluefield while en route to Mercer County Airport to see his Marine son, Sgt. Robert Davis, depart for overseas duty. State Police Cpl. E. D. Bazzie reported the fatal crash occurred today near Bluefield and Princeton.
Cecil Reid of the Texas State Game and Fish Laboratories at Rockport announced that shrimp a foot long and weighing about a half-pound each were discovered in deep water in the Gulf.
U S Senator Laird said the Health and Education Welfare Department has approved construction of the West Virginia University medical center in Morgantown. Federal funds totaling 1,000,478 dollars will help cover the total project cost of 14,200,000 dollars. The hospital will include 328 general beds 143 chronic disease beds and 49 rehabilitation beds.
