Off Maiquetia Airport north of Caracas searchers combed shark-infested waters for 51 aboard Pan Am jet that exploded on impact or shortly after landing. Fifteen bodies recovered. Miss Venezuela 1962 Olga Antonetti de Dugarte among the dead. many relatives waited amid tears as wreckage and life rafts floated in oil slicked seas.
Eight-year-old Janice Marie Hutcherson from Macon Mississippi underwent a four hour open heart operation at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. Surgeons repaired four defects in the blue baby case once described as touch and go. Janice expressed optimism before the procedure and doctors expect a two day recovery in the intensive area and about 12 days in hospital if recovery proceeds well.

Sweden granted asylum Friday to nine American GIs bringing the total Americans given asylum to 149 as Sweden opposes the Vietnam War. The West Virginian, identified as James Roberson, was among those approved by the Swedish Aliens Commission. Two unidentified Americans were denied asylum. About 200 Americans requested asylum this year, with around 20 expelled and 30 returning home willingly.
Icy winds lash the north central United States as snow drifts and blizzard conditions shut schools and slow highways. The storm roared across western Minnesota eastern South Dakota and North Dakota then moved northeast into the Upper Mississippi Valley and Canada. In South Dakota alone authorities reported 52 communities lost telephone service as ice and floes disrupted travel and damaged property on Millie Lacs Lake near St. Paul Minneapolis with 20 foot ice chunks blocking U.S. 169 and destroying fishing huts and boat slips.
Secretary of Transportation Alan S. Boyd announced the allocation of about 1,500 additional miles for the Interstate Highway System. The additions, ordered by Congress earlier this year, cover 28 states.

Three men died in a coal mine fire at Buffalo Coal Co. No. 8 near Lorado Logan County as they fled toward return air amid smoke. Five other workers escaped, while flames trapped the victims behind an electrical fire on a conveyor belt. Names given: Jack Cook 25 Lorado Frank Collins 42 Ranger Archie Adams 36 Peck's Mill.
Paris AP reports the United States and North Vietnam discussed table shapes to signal status at peace talks. In a three hour meeting negotiators Cyrus Vance and Col Ha Van Lau drew circular and donut designs, with the US proposing a donut table bisected by secretarial wings to show two sidedness, while Lau offered a four sided round table giving NLF equal status.
Brazilian President Arthur da Costa e Silva seized extraordinary powers as militiamen deployed in Rio de Janeiro and security forces muzzled the press. Armed forces prepared to confront congress after deputies deserted the government over a proposal to strip immunity from Deputy Marcio Moreira Alves and try him in the Supreme Court.
Washington AP The Federal Communications Commission on Friday authorized a limited pay television system and proposed rules requiring cable systems to obtain permission for retransmission of certain programs. Pay TV allowed in six months, limited to one station per community and only where four traditional stations are also received. Cable systems currently number about 2000, delivering air broadcast programs to subscribers.
