Cape Canaveral Florida AP reports the Army plans to launch a space probe toward the moon with zero hour approaching. The first blast off is expected in the early hours of Saturday morning though no official time has been released.
Cape Canaveral reports the Army rocket lifts Pioneer III on a journey expected to span nearly half a million miles. Von Braun and Medaris observe the countdown as the Juno II fires, with early notes comparing the effort to Explorer I. The Air Force earlier reached 79 000 miles in its second attempt.
Charleston AP reports West Virginia revenue for the general fund trails estimates by about 3 percent, prompting talk of a 5 percent cut in state spending at the Board of Public Works meeting. Gov. Underwood may seek to trim agency appropriations to cover a projected five million dollar shortfall by next June 30, a move last used under Gov. Marland.
Oklahoma Crime Bureau found the body of Franklin Randolph Boone a Morgantown West Virginia man killed by hitchhiker James Donald French 20. French admitted killing Boone while driving through Oklahoma and said he dumped the body off a roadside near Stroud after forcing Boone to drive to Memphis to cash government bonds.
A Navy man Donald D. Childers and his wife Earlene were injured when their 1951 auto slid into a 1955 model driven by Van Redden of Meadow Bridge on U S 60 one mile west of Hilton Village. Ice patches caused the collision at 9 15 p m Friday. They were taken to Beckley hospital by Nickell Funeral Home. Redden’s cousin Paulis Redden lost several front teeth. Damages were about 600 dollars per state police Corporal S C Tribett.
The West Virginia Association of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, about 15 members, met at Beckley Hotel to plan a bill for January legislative action to abolish advertising rules.
