Captain Strong's Narrow Escape Before Picket Lines
Captain Strong recounts a perilous engagement at Camp Rovance on September 7, 1861. After reconnoitering dense woods to the river, he was seized by six enemy soldiers, four infantry and two cavalry, and forced toward camp. He fought back, killed two footmen with pistol shots, and sustained a cheek wound from a musket ball while fending off mounted and foot pursuers. He evaded capture, reached a picket, and escaped to report to Major Laausren with only minor injuries.
