Baltimore Mrs D scandal and Captain L settlement
A 1862 Beaver Dam article recounts Mrs D of Baltimore insulting U S soldiers, culminating in her spitting in a officer’s face on a city street. Capt L of Massachusetts demands satisfaction. Mr D refuses apology unless his wife apologizes or he loses her. Capt L arranges a formal apology. Mrs D vows never to insult a soldier again as her husband asserts authority and the case ends with a stern public lesson.
