Soldier's remedy from Sweet Gum tree for bowel disease

A Civil War era letter extols sweet gum bark tea as a safe, immediate cure for bowel complaints from mild to Asiatic cholera. The writer, Sam Rosixson, asserts personal cures and urges soldiers in the South to use the prepare- tion, attributing efficacy to Mississippi and Louisiana knowledge and an old negro squaw. He claims a Cincinnati cure in 1832 and offers his name as testament. New York, June 20, 1862.
