Beaver County Convention Adopts Grant Colfax Ticket

A Beaver County convention reviewed a long list of township nominees and then unanimously supported Gen. Ulysses S Grant for President and Schuyler Colfax for Vice President. They approved resolutions endorsing impeachment action and praising Gov Geary, with nominations for county offices and a motion to unify the ticket. The body extended instructions to state lawmakers to back Erie canal expansion and approved party unity.

Nominating Republican ticket and party unity vow

The convention endorses a unified Republican ticket with A. T. Shallenberger, S. Magaw, and H. Hice as congressional conferees and calls for county committees to govern primaries under the Crawford county system. A letter lauds Grant and Colfax, urges support against Democratic patronage, and warns of threats to universal suffrage and liberty from corruption and despotism.

Grant Nomination Call From New York World Pressure

The New York World urges unity behind Gen Grant for the Presidency, arguing Democrats should not oppose him and urging voters to strengthen his hand. The War Department oversight and Republican debates over Grant’s stance on reconstruction create party tension as discussion centers on his fitness and the nation’s welfare.

The Republican Call to Victory in Pennsylvania 1868

A Civil War era plea from Gen. GALUBEA 4 Grow, chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican Committee, urging loyalty to the Union, condemning the Democratic party for its wartime stance, and predicting victory in November with strong organization and vigilance. The text cites Donelson Vicksburg and Appomattox as proof of the Union’s sacrifices.

Stanton resigns War Department as Senate impeachment fails

In Washington on May 20 1868 Secretary Stanton relinquished charge of the War Department after impeachment articles failed to win two thirds of the Senate. He handed books and papers to Brevet Major General Townsend and said he would leave the office at day’s end. Delegations urged him to stay but he remained firm. It is reported that Acting Secretary Thomas may assume control of the War Office the next day.

Grant’s character proves worth beyond display in politics

An old World editorial from the Civil War era is reprinted to argue that true leadership rests in solid work and practical democracy, not parade or showy style. It praises Grant’s plainness, restraint, and ability, contrasting him with demagogues and flashy pretenders.
