Real life tragedy reveals elaborate 1814 Waterloo paymaster plot
In 1814 Mr W of Waterloo New York was paymaster general for Sackett’s Harbor forces. His wife and associate bondman Mr F devised a scheme to steal public funds. After luring the money to Albany a trunk held $33 000 and a later attempt exposed the plot. Judge K and Mrs W faced confrontation revealing the missing funds were hidden in her bed chamber. The tale ends with arrests and dramatic exposure of the crime.
