The Revere Beach Chronicle and Beachmont Se WHinlity list announce merger with the Winthrop Tribune. J H Hartvey of Boston reports subscription integration and subscriber courtesy extended during the transition period.
Last Friday evening a large group of Baptist Sunday School members gathered at Edward Magee's Main street home to honor Alice Magee for nine years as Secretary of the Sunday School. A gold pen, pencil and inkstand were presented, followed by a social hour, a bountiful collation, tea and coffee, and games, singing, and music.
In Boston on January 30 1883 Rev Henry Morgan exposed coal dealers selling by unlawful baskets. A reporter noted the law and observed baskets used across the city including a charitable institution. The writer humorously questions why Morgan bears the burden of shaming these robbers of the poor.
The Winthrop town record lists 1883 polls 296, personal estate 46 685 dollars, real estate 1 781 895 dollars, total valuation 1 831 280 dollars, town and state tax 21 905 dollars, rate 11 80 per thousand, 134 dwellings up 45. Social and civic items follow including lyceum debates, church services, a planned trestle extension toward Cottage Hill Depot, and local notices on property, roads, and residents.
Beachmont residents plan house occupancy through June first. Crest avenue resident Miss Smith remains home after a severe ice accident. The Citizens Meeting drew about forty voters with Kneip presiding and a committee set to confer with North Revere and Pavilion voters. Stanley’s daughter broke an arm yesterday. Morse plans additions to a cottage on Bellingham avenue and contemplates another near his current home. Mrs. Hopkins was moved from Swiss Cottage to Cambridgeport after serious illness. Mr. Marshalls bonbon party drew ~25 guests with dancing and refreshments. Mrs. Howard Sawyer’s surprise party had fifty six guests and a gold ring. Gold price excitement drew about 100 beachgoers on Sunday. Ocean Pier Skating Rink work progresses with 200 square feet of flooring planned. Summer residents attended. Charles Walton to race at Paris Skating Rink and recently won a medal. he is regarded as a top state skater.
The article notes Ensign Tewksbury building a new house on Shirley Street near the new pier and Mr. Bacon starting a residence on Cottage Hill avenue. Over half the stock in a new steamboat company has been subscribed aiming for hourly service between Cottage Hill pier and Foster's Wharf Boston. Several houses under construction or nearing completion on Cottage Hill and nearby, including works by architect Willard B Bacon and Boston residents Ezra Whittier and G M Johnson.
