Main Street petitioners arrange water supply with Boston Water Board to April 1. Jos Gahm hosted a Boston restaurant party with state representatives. Methodist Church to hold Christmas service with singing readings addresses. Centenary medals to fundraisers for children’s fund. Selectmen received hay scales resignation from Edward Magee and Edward P Pero. Charles Burrill appointed pro tem. Freddie Shaneck nearly died in cold snap after leaving school. saved at door by timely discovery.
A letter from J.J. dated December 24 1884 opposes adopting hand grenades to fight fires in Winthrop. The writer warns such devices could be misused in no license towns substituting liquor for the grenades and urges public canvassing before the next town meeting.
Dr J B Wubell of the Red Cross reports from Gladsville Wise County Virginia on plague rumors. He says some sensational claims are exaggerated while others are confirmed by his three day ride from rail or telegraph in a wild district. The first case appeared in July before the drought began.
A reminiscence describes a hummingbird nest seen through a window during a rainstorm as a leaf covers the nest. The piece then shifts to a comic exchange with Dr. Tanner who advocates bran as a dietary staple, noting a famine relief anecdote and a reporter’s quip about living on bran.
A hummer built a nest beside a window and sheltered it during a storm with a large leaf. The nest remained dry after the rain as the bird covered it and later unhooked the leaf, leaving the nest intact.
