Cost of living dips in August from July peak

U S government report shows the consumer price index easing by one tenth of a percent in August led by lower prices for fresh fruits and vegetables autos and women s apparel. The index stood at 108.2 in August up 1 percent from a year earlier and down from 168.3 in July. Food costs fell three tenths of a percent as prices for potatoes and produce dropped while meat prices rose seven tenths of a percent with beef and pork higher.

Tower to join Goldwater Special tour in Baytown

Senator John Tower will visit Baytown on the Goldwater Special bus routing state GOP candidates. Rites Friday For Boy 10 in Baytown area

Funeral services for James Clark Pennington, 10, of Baytown will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Earthman Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. AL Jordan of Memorial Baptist Church Baytown officiating. Burial will follow at Normangee Cemetery. Surviving relatives include his father David Lee Pennington and grandparents in Nacogdoches and Angleton. Seven Hurt in Tuesday Crashes injure five at city roads

Seven people, including a Baytown man, were injured in two Tuesday afternoon crashes. One collision occurred near the Sit Jacinto River Bridge on Highway 72, another at the Decker Drive exit on Highway 73. Morice Edward Trip of La Porte drove a car that collided head on with Calvin O Sroussard of Kilmore. Lula Mae Baltrip and Willis Baltrip of La Porte and Conroe residents were treated. Baltrip took responsibility as the other driver. The Baltrip car had two passengers injured and was westbound on Decker Drive. The crash investigations continued at Gulf Coast Hospital and law enforcement agencies.
