October marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Baytown embracing pink across the community from ribbons to retail items. The month-long focus aims to raise awareness and support for breast cancer education and research, reflected in local events and features on page 5A.
Citizens worry about full time attention as Sheriff Joe LaRive takes a second job as Baytown marshal. LaRive will leave office at midnight Dec 31 with sheriff elect Brian Hawthorne set to be sworn in, while Patti Jett says the arrangement poses no conflict for Baytown.
The United Way of Baytown Area hosts a Community Kickball Tournament with 18 teams competing for the championship at Wayne Gray Sports Complex. Games start at 9 a.m. with team arrival by 8:30 a.m. at Lee College tent. Admission is free. events include face painting and concessions while proceeds fund kindergarten readiness work. Barbers Hill ISD trustees authorized a Chapter 313 agreement for ExxonMobil to build a polyethylene plant at the Mont Belvieu plastics site. The $1.2 billion project would create up to 5,000 construction jobs and 230 total long term workers while allowing BHISD to reduce tax payments over the next decade. If approved by the state, it would be among the largest such deals nationwide and would shift tax payments away from Robin Hood funding temporarily.
