Lovett Named Deputy Defense Secretary in White House Move

Washington dispatch reports Robert A. Lovett former undersecretary of State will become Deputy Secretary of Defense. President Truman phoned Lovett at his Locust Valley home to offer the post which Lovett accepted, replacing Stephen T Barry who departs September 30 for Pullman Inc. Captain Harold B. Persky of Temple led tanks through Seoul when he met three American trucks carrying soldiers. Believing them to be enemy, Persky ordered fire. The trucks and troops were destroyed with machine gun and cannon fire. Forty Communist dead lay on the road as the tanks ceased fire. Persky said they were surprised, but the others were more surprised.

Pioneer Baytown rigger Eunice Bender dies at hospital

Eunice Bender 59 a Baytown area pioneer and former Goose Creek rigger and carpenter died at a local hospital at 3 am after months of illness. She lived in Baytown about 30 years and belonged to Cedar Bayou Bar Church. Funeral services will be held with burial at Hill of Rest Cemetery. Surviving are two daughters Mrs Stiles of Houston and Mr Bird of Baytown two sons Robert and Buddy Bender of Baytown a brother Harvey Austin of Navagdoche three nephews and six grandchildren.
