Baytown Crime Stoppers Formed In 1981 Insures Tax Deductible Tips
In late 1980 Baytown Police Chief Bo Turner supported Crime Stoppers at a City Council meeting. Jean Shepherd led civic efforts, and the Chamber committee formed an independent Baytown Crime Stoppers group. Baytown Crime Stoppers, Inc. incorporated March 9 1981 as a 501c3. Charles Tillery became chairman with Wayne Gray as vice chair and other officers: Joy Ralls secretary Jay Eshbach treasurer. The hotline 427 TIPS debuted. first call March 28 1981. Detective Gene Sutton made the first arrest from a tip on April 22 1981 for felony theft involving 38 rabbits from Ola Greer’s yard.
