The Lee College Board of Regents approved a 2013 14 tax rate with a 2 cent per $100 increase to 26.07 cents. The rise funds bond projects while maintenance and operations remain at 21.95 cents and debt service at 4.12 cents. Revenues are expected at 23.4 million vs 21.2 million last year. Vice president Steve Evans notes property taxes cover about 47 percent of operating costs with tuition and fees at 26 percent and state support at around 21 percent.
U S Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius visited Dallas to promote the federal health care overhaul but said many poor Texans could not receive help without state cooperation. Texas has the nation's highest uninsured rate and leaders have rejected billions in federal funds to expand Medicaid.
