Laytown Man Faces Jail Term For Drunk Driving

Vernon Blackwell, 43, of Laytown, faces 20 days in jail and a $50 fine for misdemeanor drunk driving on May 27. He already had a five year suspended sentence after a murder by auto conviction in the traffic death of four year old Chere Morris on Highway 146. The judge handed down the drunk driving penalty in Houston this week on the state’s recommendation. The DA noted the law restricts introducing the murder conviction in this proceeding, and suspended murder by auto reparation cannot be pursued unless a new felony or misdemeanor arises. Blackwell’s prior conviction followed a Birch 29, 1953 indictment for the death of Chere Morris.
