Storm briefs warn City of Baytown and portions of Chambers County including Smith Point Oak Island and Double Bayou south of FM 1985. An emergency Commissioners Court meeting set for today at 11 a.m. may issue further voluntary or mandatory evacuations.
Goose Creek schools cancel classes and all extracurricular activities through Saturday. Anahuac and Barbers Hill districts also suspend classes and activities for today and the rest of the week. Crosby closes Friday with Thursday and Friday canceled. Baytown Christian Academy shuts Thursday and Friday with activities canceled Thursday through Friday.
Lee College suspends all classes and activities Thursday through Sunday including San Jacinto Mall Crosby Huffman and Liberty campuses. As Hurricane Rita nears the Texas gulf coast, Baytown and lower Chambers County declare voluntary evacuations, with a separate mandatory order for residents needing mobility assistance. City officials warn Rita could strengthen to category three or four, prompting possible further evacuations. Evacuation routes point to Lufkin and Nacogdoches shelters, with check-in at Lufkin High School and Fredonia Hill Baptist Church.
Baytown area districts Goose Creek Barbers Hill Deer Park and Pasadena canceled classes for the rest of the week amid a voluntary evacuation order. Goose Creek delayed a decision then moved to cancel after city officials announced evacuation plans as the storm intensified.
