Battery In Each Region Antimissile System Announced
The Pentagon plans a $5 billion Nike X antimissile system to place at least one battery in each U S region protected by Sprint missiles. McNamara described a light defense aimed mainly at countering a potential Chinese nuclear threat in the 1970s with batteries along borders and coasts, plus some near general offensive missiles. Canada may host a radar site near the Great Lakes as part of the broader alert network, while the plan stops short of a full scale defense against a Soviet attack.
