Anahuac Texas hosts Gatorfest 2005 as the alligator hunting season opens. The festival features a 10 am Great Texas Alligator Roundup, cooks, and display of hunter-caught gators. Cash prizes exceed 4500 dollars. past winners showed gators up to 13 feet.
More than 25 faith leaders and laypeople gathered at Lee College in Baytown on Friday for a Katrina remembrance service. The event followed President Bush declaring a national day of prayer. Readings from Psalm 46 and Acts 11 accompanied prayers for those transitioning from shelters to homes.
Baytown Parks officials cite lack of participation in the Wayne Gray Sports Complex event, canceling the first adult softball tourney. The Taste of Texas outdoor concert proceeds at Rotary Club of Baytown Pavilion, starting 6 p.m. today with Patrick Murphy, Django Walker, and Jace Everett.
Two Anahuac residents attended a public hearing on the city tax rate. Mayor Guy Robert Jackson said inflation and fuel costs press residents while new debt from water system upgrades requires a rate increase from 0.54408 to 0.60225 per 100 value. The aging 70-year-old system averages one water line break daily, worsened by dry weather. grant funding is tightening. See ANAHUAC on Page 7A.
Donations to the Christian Small Business collection effort came from as far as New Jersey. Smith Barney in Brunswick, N J sent boxes of clothes and toiletries after a Baytown Sun article. The Sandy Lane warehouse stores items for evacuees, including the Jackson and Martin families from Kenner, Louisiana.
