Vietnam Troop Withdrawals Accelerate Ahead of Schedule
In November a substantial increase in the withdrawal rate signals a probable total troop pullback by spring or earlier. President Thieu foresees no U.S. ground force withdrawal until next summer at the earliest and says South Vietnam will need American air support. Two main factors drive faster U.S. withdrawal: Hanoi’s insistence on POW release before any pullout and a potential Nixon shift on a 1971 withdrawal deadline.
