SUN Spots Library Hours Change At College

Library hours for fall are altered by Dean Walter Rundeil to aid students. The library stays open until 9:30 p.m. on weekdays after classes, opens 2 a.m. to 3:0 p.m. Sundays except holidays, and Friday hours run 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Howard, the college librarian, will attend the Texas Library Association meeting in Dallas. Donations drives run at First National Bank and Citizens Bank through Sept. 22. Signups for Optimist Pee Wee football occur Sunday at the Junior Optimist building near Robert E. Lee High School. Ex-Gander lettermen from Robert E. Lee High meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Holiday Inn for officer elections. Slipper Found After Child Bootie Mystery Near Town

A six week old girl lost her bootie on Texas Avenue Tuesday and it was found by a clerk in a Main Stem store perched on a man's shoe in the store window. The Sun reports several calls after the missing bootie story appeared Wednesday.

Three Car Collision Kills La Porte Youth

A five year old La Porte boy Robby Long McCormick is dead after a three car crash on Highway 146 near the Baytown La Porte Tunnel. Six others injured include Robby’s sister Fleeta Jaye McCormick and Marcus Scott. Police described the McCormick convertible losing control on a slick road and colliding with the McKee car. Funeral services for Robby Long are pending.

Humphrey to Address Houston Leaders at Rice Hotel

Sen Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota arrives in Houston Friday to speak at a dinner for business leaders. Restaurateur Wins Appeal on Civil Rights Act Unconstitutionality

A three judge federal panel in Birmingham held the public accommodations section of the Civil Rights Act unconstitutional as applied to Ollie McClung Sr. and his son co owners of Ollie’s Barbecue. The judges issued a temporary restraining order against enforcing the act and a Justice Department spokesman said the department would appeal to the Supreme Court seeking a stay. The decision contrasts with a similar Atlanta panel that found the section constitutional.

Firemen Civil Service Exam Seeks More Applicants

Raymond Donnelly, director of the civil service commission, said only four applications exist for the firemen civil service exam set for Sept. 29. He urged a dozen applicants and said the test will be at 6 p.m. in Sterling Municipal Library. Applications are available at the commission office at 3120 Wisconsin Avenue or the fire chief's office, with a Sept. 28 deadline. Applicants must be 21 to 35, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weigh at least 160 pounds, with knowledge of fire protection, equipment, city geography, and the ability to follow directions and act calmly in emergencies.

Exams Set To Select Policemen In City

A civil service examination to select two city policemen is set for Sept. 29 at Sterling Municipal Library. Raymond T. Dennelly, civil service commission director, announced. Applications are available at 3120 Wisconsin Ave from 9 a.m. to noon and at the police chief’s office 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Applications must be returned by 5 p.m. Sept. 28. Pay is $105 monthly. Eligibility: men 21 to 35 years old, 5 feet 8 inches, 160 pounds, with high school education or equivalent and knowledge of police practices and local laws. Medical exam determines fitness.

Liquor Store Robbery Nets $80 in Baytown

A Black man entered Sum-Tex Liquor at 1302 Harbour Wed night about 7:30. He ordered whiskey, then robbed attendant Nora Frazier and about $80, cut phone wires, and fled. Police described suspect to Oliver W. Jackson. Other police notes include theft at Sims Coin Shop and several minor Baytown accidents with no injuries.

Baytown hit by four inch rain and lightning

Fringe Benefits Boosted for Humble Oil Workers at Baytown

Gulf Coast Industrial Workers Union representing about two thousand Humble Oil and Refining Co Baytown employees accepted a wage offer from the company. The deal adds an extra week of vacation per man and raises the hospitalization plan contribution by two dollars monthly. wage changes vary by employee group with lump sum payments and retroactive dates August 1961. Orphanage Site Marker To Be Dedicated Sunday
