Stocks dip as mixed data dim market rally
Wall Street closed lower after industrial production and inventory reports suggested gradual but uneven improvement. The Dow fell 22.74 points to 9448.81 while the Nasdaq slid to 1845.70 and the S&P 500 eased to 1014.81 amid cautious trading ahead of earnings. Major movers included Motorola dropping after a rating downgrade and insurers slipping as Isabel neared the East Coast.
