Galveston Chamber to Meet Over Publicity After Election

Five Lee teenagers are involved in an auto crash as Galveston faces negative publicity following the last municipal election. Chamber President B J Pennington Sr says the board unanimously voted to convene a special meeting next week to address the situation. He cites complaints from businessmen about harm to local commerce and notes Mayor George Roy Clough’s May 11 election has led to magazine articles promoting prostitution as essential to Galveston's tourism.

Circus Plans Told For East Harris Scout Event

East Harris County Boy Scout District outlines the annual circus to be held Oct 15 at Humble Ball Park with about 1200 Scouts and 400 adult leaders. A planning meeting Thursday at the Community Building will assign roles. W H Williams chairs the circus program and urges unit teachers to attend.

Tropical storms Hilda and Ione intensify on Atlantic approach

The Miami and Houston reports indicate Hurricane Ione surging toward the Atlantic, with winds near 74 to 80 mph, centered about 250 miles northeast of San Juan and moving northwest. Hurricane Hilda gains force after crossing Cuba, near 390 miles south of Havana, heading west-southwest toward the Mexican mainland, with warnings issued for Puerto Rico and the Leeward Islands.

Early Baytown Settler Dixie Howard Dies at 84

Mrs. Dixie Belle Howard a Baytown pioneer since 1839 died of a heart attack in Austin. Funeral held at Earthman chapel with Rev. A L. Jordan. burial in Hill of Rest cemetery. She moved with her parents from Lindon to Whitesboro and lived in a tent before settling at 210 East Sterling. Survived by son Don Howard and others, with details clarified in the family notes.

Old St Marys University Bayshore Landmark Is Demolished

The historic St Mary's University admin building in La Porte is being demolished to clear a tract sold to Harris County for Sylvan Beach Park expansion. Norria and Stanford hold the demolition contract as the structure is gutted, with debris removal planned. Five Robert E. Lee students hurt in band practice wreck

Five youths from Robert E. Lee high school were injured when the car carrying the Summers group collided with another vehicle on Went Sterling. Mary Jo Brawn 16 suffered severe shock sprained ankle and bruises while Marilyn Gilbert 17 and Priscilla Myers 17 sustained major bruises and abrasions. Soapy King 16 was lightly bruised and strained. Richard Summers Jr 18 escaped with minor bruises. Summers was cited for reckless driving.

New Well Starts Near Mont Belvieu After Barbers Hill Fight

Two Houston men testified at a preliminary hearing after a barbers hill knife fight left Harry Murphy badly wounded. Murphy, 245 pounds, said Dan Purvis and his brother attacked aboard a ship channel boat, leading to multiple stab and cut injuries and 200 stitches. The Purvis brothers were bound over to the grand jury on assault with intent to murder.
