Harris County Commissioners approved multiple items advancing east county projects including an agreement with the City of Baytown to reconstruct North Main Street from I 10 to Wallisville Road and initiate right of way acquisitions. They also accepted a GCCISD road easement for the Wallisville Road junction near Goose Creek Memorial High School, started base repair and resurfacing on Garth Road and Wallisville Road, authorized 10 Channelview property acquisitions for a Flood Control District project along Carpenters Bayou, with work slated mid to late 2012, and extended Metro Park and Ride service from San Jacinto Mall to Downtown Houston.
Goose Creek CISD held its fourth Reach Out To Dropouts Walk on Saturday September 10 with more than 390 district and community volunteers walking neighborhoods to persuade recent dropouts to return to school. See walk page for details.
State Sen Tommy Williams R The Woodlands warned of border crime at a lunchtime briefing in Mont Belvieu. He cited 25 to 32 billion dollars in cash smuggled across the Texas Mexico border, largely from marijuana profits funding a Mexico based criminal enterprise and increasing violence. He also noted a rise in special interest aliens from terrorist linked regions arriving in Texas.
A Harris County deputy fatally shot a Crosby teenager Tuesday morning after the teen charged the deputy with a knife during a welfare check. Authorities released no names and said the deputy would be placed on desk duty while homicide and district attorney offices investigate. Autopsy results were pending. Witness account noted by a neighbor on scene.
Members of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Baytown gathered for their monthly membership lunch to hear about the Communities in Schools program. It was the group’s first meeting after the summer break. Jacqueline Whitaker, coordinator for public awareness and partnerships, spoke at length.
The Hispanic Chamber presented the program assisted by program coordinator Barbara Castellanos. The dropout prevention initiative serves Goose Creek CISD schools, Barbers Hill and other area districts. Whitaker noted the organization maintains a caseworker in each GCCISD secondary school.
