Ann Richards, former Texas governor and national political figure, died at her Austin home after a cancer battle. Spokeswoman says she passed away Wednesday night surrounded by family. she was 73.

Goose Creek district figures show college-bound seniors who graduated in 2006 scored below state and national SAT averages. In contrast, they outperformed the state average on the ACT, reflecting mixed results on entrance exams as reported from district data.
The College Board reports that 329 GCCISD students from the 2006 high school class took the SAT at least once. Scores indicate performance below the SAT average but above the ACT average, per the page 104 data.
Goose Creek Superintendent Barbara Sultis told the Baytown Rotary Club the district is stepping up in many areas in a state of the district presentation. She noted staffing and growth pressures as of August 31 with 20,252 students enrolled, highlighting progress and ongoing efforts to meet demands.
More than 400 participants aged 50 and older will compete next week at Lee College and area centers in events ranging from volleyball to bridge. Registration closes at 8 a.m. Tuesday with free events and a commemorative T-shirt for all entrants.
A second Highlands woman, Lanrece Linthicum, 26, was arrested at home on one charge of sexual assault of a child aged 14 to 17. Bond set at $20,000. Detective William Lilly noted a Tuesday warrant. A prior arrest, Deborah Joyce Lux 32 also known as Deborah Conway, was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 and sexual assault of a 14 to 17 year old, held on $50,000 combined bonds and set for arraignment September 22 in the 208th District Court.
