Maine voters elected their first Democratic governor in 20 years, Edmund S. Muskie, defeating incumbent Republican Burdett B. Cross by about 20,000 votes. Returns from 606 of 626 precincts showed Muskie leading Cross 195,992 to 133,450. Senator Margaret Chase Smith and other GOP incumbents won reelection. Cross cited rural hurricane damage as a factor.
