Harold Reid, new Baylawn Chamber of Commerce director, hosts an open house at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Chamber Building No 2 W Texas Ave. Baytown. The event aims to introduce the community to the new leader.

Harris County Judge Jonway plans to deliver city priorities for a county bond election. The top item is adding a four lane expansion on North Main from Baker intersection to Interstate 10 with curbs and gutters. Next, four lanes on Baker Street from Decker Drive to Cedar Bayou Lynchburg Road, including storm sewers. Other high priorities include Decker Drive and Garth Read, Cedar Bayou Lynchburg Road from Decker to Cedar Bayou, and Bush Street four lanes with storm sewers from Baker to Cedar Bayou.
The Baytown Sun reports Gulf Oil coordination with the U S Department of Energy to host a Washington energy conference. Senators Congressmen and industry officials will discuss President Carter energy proposals and grassroots implications for Americans. Reporter Muriel Scott will cover the event with a series of articles. Attendees include Senators Ted Stevens John Tower Gary Hart and Gary Sart Representatives Clarence Brown Bob Eckhardt Jim Wright Phil Sharp plus former FPC chair Richard Dunham and other officials.
Baytown Area Water Authority plans a surface water treatment plant on about 60 acres north of I 10 beside the CIWA canal. Two tracts, one owned by the Russell estate at 3 510 per acre and another by Texas Wesleyan College at 3 750 per acre, will be acquired with earnest money for 30.6 acres. Construction is set to start in early 1978 with a total project cost around 55.37 million and bonds already sold totaling 1.25 million. Bonded debt will raise water rates after October 1 and again in two years.

President Carter’s popularity slips as he campaigns with Brendan Byrne in New Jersey. In Rome, 1977’s summer heat sharpens Italy’s nudity debate among the wealthy.

Baytown patrolman Paulk was killed when his police car was hit head on by a van on Lawndale Avenue near Lakewood at 8 40 pm Friday. Witnesses identified the van driver as 24 year old Ernest Andrewong of Alabama. The van crossed lanes and struck the patrol car. Driver Sutton and another officer gave details of the crash and Paulk was pinned. he will be buried in Albany, Georgia after a memorial service.
City moves to demolish unattractive structures found unfit for habitation. Urban Rehabilitation Standards Board reviews cases while Chief Inspector Jack Cramer says owners face 60 day repair or demolition deadlines. If ignored, properties are targeted in stages with city inspectors documenting condition for action.
The owner or agent faces board action to obtain bids for demolition. Cerner commends the board for its work and time spent. In early oil boom days Baytown families moved from Batson-Sour Lake area to Beaumont where Dr John Bevil, a country physician, delivered many babies. The Perricone quads Anthony Bernard Carl and Donald live on Quad Lane with homes built side by side. Bevil, at 97, and the quads near 48, remain notable. The quads are believed to be among the oldest living quadruplets. On Sept 17 the DAR and SAR will honor Bevil with a Medal of Honor for distinguished service to humanity at Mary and John Gray Library. A tribute in Big Thicket Legacy recalls Bevil as a beloved family doctor who helped generations, with many babies named John Rus in Hardin County.
