France Admits Large US Gold Sale In June
Washington AP reports France’s secret June sale of gold to the United States was far larger than speculated. The Treasury quarterly report shows an actual figure of 224 million dollars, greater than the expected 100 million. The United States still faced a 219 million outflow of gold in the second quarter, after a large first quarter drain of 1.4 billion as it supported gold prices on the London market. Since March a new two price system lets markets set their own level while governments trade only, with the fixed 35 dollar price now used only in official dealings. France had pursued an aggressive monthly gold purchase from the U.S., exchanging dollars for bullion until September 194.
