U S Marines battled about 3000 North Vietnamese nearly six hours below the demilitarized zone, reporting 34 Marines killed and 185 wounded while claiming at least 140 enemy dead. U S casualties rose to 149 killed and 567 wounded as heavy fighting and air strikes swirled across northern Vietnam.
Rep. Melvin R. Laird Wisconsin Republican withdraws support for President Johnson's Vietnam policy citing a shift in U.S. aims. Her mother has long suffered from a muscular disease, and Barnes plans to teach piano after college while earning about $90,000 in personal appearances.
