More than 2,000 Baytonians and area refugees sought shelter in schools churches and public buildings as Hurricane Carla bore down on the Texas Coast. High tides reached about 10 feet at the docks causing traffic delays and damage to nearby tank farms. no injuries or fatalities were reported. Refugee centers operated by Red Cross are active with ongoing relief efforts and bread deliveries.
