Most Communes Gone But Some Struggle On
TAOS New Mexico AP communes once numbered in the thousands during the 1960s counterculture era now dwindle to about a dozen in northern New Mexico. Some endure by tilling land or shifting to crafts or faith, while others vanish as the dream fades and internal conflicts emerge. Local youths recount life in Morningstar and other communes with stories of abandonment, drugs, and revolutions fading as residents move on.
