Betsy Skirts Florida On Her Way Into Gulf

Hurricane Betsy drove a six foot wall of water across Florida’s lower east coast and battered the Keys with winds near 140 mph. The surge sent the Miami River over its banks and into industrial plants while waves swamped islands and flooded streets in Miami Fort Lauderdale and nearby cities. Only one death was initially reported as power lines failed cutting electric service to thousands and many relied on stores and trailers for days without light or refrigeration.

Valuation figures due for Baytown 1965 tax

Baytown officials await a final total valuation figure for 1965 tax purposes. R H Pruett, chairman of the City Tax Equalization Board, said the assessment tabulation continued Wednesday and an estimate of 130 million dollars is likely. The figure informs the proposed 1965 66 city budget and a tax rate near 1.39 per 100 valuation to raise the same revenue as the former 1.86 rate after the citywide reappraisal. The board heard 130 to 140 property owners who were unsatisfied with their assessments, with no suits anticipated. The final session lasted 12 hours. praise was given to Carter Miller and Dr Charles L Umholtz.

Baytown to honor courteous drivers with traffic awards

Baytown's Traffic Safety Council announced certificates this month for courteous drivers to reduce accidents. The program began Sept 2 and runs through Sept 15, with grand prizes for outstanding adult and teenage drivers. A committee including Timon O'Brien and Police Chief Blair Mann organized plans.

City Council Sets Public Budget Hearing Date

The council schedules a public budget hearing for Sept 27 as five special meetings address the 1965-86 city budget. City Manager Fritz Lanham notes final valuation figures from the equalization board will be reviewed, with proposed budgets based on about $130 million valuations and a $130 tax rate per $1,000. Other items include beer permit hearing, fire zone amendments, traffic signal responsibility, and related agenda items. The session starts at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Trustees to Eye Sterling Boundary

Sterling High School boundary lines and grades will be reviewed at a special school board meeting Wednesday night. Board president Knox T. Beavers said the panel must decide whether to open Sterling with all four grades or with only two. Deputy Superintendent John M. Stuart will report on the reading program and other matters at the session set for 7:30 p.m. in the administration building board room.

Denmark Firm Picks Bayport Site for U S Plant

Haldor Topsoe Inc of New York City announced the selection of S acres in Humble and Refining Co. Bayport development near La Porte as the site for its first United States plant. Construction starts immediately and catalyst production is expected to begin early in 1956. The project exceeds $1 million and will later include an office building and research facilities. Local recruitment will fill skilled technician and professional roles. Bayport was chosen for proximity to customers and ready access to water, highway, and rail.

Maith Pupils Here Get Benefit Of Mechanical Age

Maith students at Ross Sterling High School will have overhead projectors and built in screens in each room announced by Principal Winttie Brown. The math program will be housed on the second floor near the science wing with a committee of Mrs. Hallie Patterson Miss Evelyn Robson and Dr Burnett H Johnson overseeing planning. The school aims to accommodate up to 2500 students with as many as 21000 math students at peak and up to 72 sections of math each with up to 30 students.

Seven Policemen Are Needed Here

Baytown police seek seven patrolmen with Civil Service exams to be held by October. Applications available at police HQ on South Main or via the Baytown Civil Service Commission. Six hires are budgeted plus one vacancy from a resignation. Prospective officers must meet height and weight standards: minimum 5 10, 155 pounds. 5 11, 160. 6 feet, 165. maximum 190, 185, 190, 200, and 29 pounds.

Legislature action reshapes Senate districts amid county changes

The session amends district boundaries as planned. Senate membership stays the same next year. Haring County will elect four senators instead of one. A southern part of the county gains representation by State Sen. A. R. Schwartz of Galveston, with East Harris County also affected. See Senate, page 2.

India says new army thrusts into West Pakistan

New Delhi reports two Indian army offensives into West Pakistan after Pakistani bombers failed to strike Delhi. Defense Minister Chavan stated a spearhead crossed into Southeast Khaparpur and captured Gadra, with troops advancing toward Shaprapar. A northern frontier incursion near Kashmir was also noted, while Dwarka bombardment claims caused no military damage.
