Herbert E. Marietta, 55, of Houston and formerly Baytown, died Tuesday in Southmore Hospital Pasadena. He moved to Houston in 1957 after directing Morrison Furniture Co. and later worked as a manufacturer. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel of the Roses in Pasadena. He was a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church, helped organize the Baytown Elks Lodge, and belonged to several fraternal orders. Survivors include his widow Cordelia, three daughters, four sons, a sister and a brother. Burial will be in Eden Cemetery Newark Ohio.
Friday night opens Bay-Tex football with five teams in play and Ganders leading at Baytown Memorial Stadium with Kimmie Williams Cecil Morse Barns as hosts. Other matches include Mt. Carmel Channelview and Crosby with a 7 30 p m kickoff. Saturday features Hemmstan Oiters and Onktemd Raidera at Serre Ste Hiern and Pal Poteet.
On the first day of the fall semester Dean Walter Rundell announced that 600 students registered, bringing total registrations to 966 including 36 in pre registration. Registration runs Thursday and Friday from 4 5 am to 12 20 pm and 4 to 10 30 pm with late registrations through September.
Baytowns United Fund Drive preps for October with a $185,807 goal. Division chairs named include Max Nuttall heading Huber employes and Royals leading United Rubber and Chemical Company plant workers. Frank Goss oversees the commercial division with 106 firms and 1,133 workers, aided by Bud Blackburn and Frank Thompson. Jim M. Bryan leads the industrial division covering 88 firms and 664 workers. City officials W. L. Ward and C. A. Hansen canvass hospitals and government offices, Ward having long led the assignment.
Paul Richards of Waxahachie Texas signed a three year contract to become the Houston Colts boss on Thursday morning. The reported 60 thousand dollar annual salary marks a major move after 36 years in baseball with the Orioles and other roles. Richards noted this is the job he has always wanted and spoke of assembling a 40 player roster of native Texans for next season while beginning immediate evaluations of talent. The shift from American to National League will be eased by his extensive league experience.
Rosh Hashanah observances in Houston begin Sunday at 6 30 pm at K Nesseth Israel Bay. General Manager George Kirksey, noted Colt of Kalendar, will lead the anniversary service with Eddie Robinson.

Interment will be at Cedar Crest Cemetery. The death occurred Wednesday in Galveston. Survived by mother Mrs. Rosalie Porter and siblings Carolyn Sue Smith, Raymond F. Smith, and Leo C. Land. Funeral services to be at Earthman Chapel with Rev Jenkins Woods officiating at Memorial Assembly of God in Baytown.
Washington AP reports the government selects the Michoud ordnance plant near New Orleans as the site for a 500 million project to fabricate large stages for giant moon rockets. The choice marks a major step toward landing a man on the moon by 1970 with a research center to follow at the site.
Baytown officials toured Waco’s east and west industrial districts on Thursday as the Waco Chamber of Commerce hosted them. The visit, arranged with Famous Industries Survey Co, cost about 15000 dollars and included a luncheon and district tour to study Waco’s industrial plan for possible Baytown adoption.
Funeral services for Roxa C Patterson 76 of 6411 Decker Drive will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hyde Park Funeral Chapel Houston. Burial follows at South Park Cemetery. She was born in Ames Iowa and survived by a daughter Mrs L Kittle Baytown a son Royce Patterson of Houston two brothers D Bracewell and F Bracewell of Almyra Ark two sisters Mrs A M Wilson Brinkley Ark and Mrs Arthur Spencer Roadhouse Ill four grandchildren one great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
