Gary Odom of Baytown recalls the Labor Day tragedy when six relatives died in a two vehicle crash on Highway 146 near Dayton. Parents Matt and June Odom, aunt and uncle Carl and Rowena, cousin Keith, and cousin Peggy perished. Troy Odom survived at eight.
The United Way of Greater Baytown Area and Chambers County began in 1946 after World War II and held a first campaign that year raising $45,388. Under executive director David Mohlman the agency has grown, surpassing $1 million in 1986, $2 million in 2006, and $3 million in 2011-2012. The 2013-2014 campaign target is $3.3 million to support kindergarten readiness and local needs through about 200 partnerships including American Red Cross and Baytown Resource and Assistance Center.
Texas Senator Sylvia Garcia told the Baytown Chamber of Commerce that education health care and the economy require coordinated efforts across state county and city levels. She emphasized public education and workforce development as priorities and noted the need to adjust revenue and cooperate with Baytown officials after returning from Austin.
