Lead and defense and opening leads in bridge analysis
In a three no trump defense the lead choice matters. West may lead heart five or heart nine and the defender must adapt. If West leads heart five the plan is heart ace then heart jack to attack partner. If West leads heart nine top of nothing signals South holds king and queen of hearts and a spade shift follows. A clever South could underlead, forcing a different defensive line.
