Federal Trade Commission data show about 10 million people suffered identity theft last year, with losses of 53 billion dollars to businesses and consumers. The survey estimates 27.3 million victims over five years from unauthorized charges, bank withdrawals, or new credit in their names, while 161,815 complaints were filed in 2002.
