A Baytown Retail Merchants meeting is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at The Tower to discuss the fall calendar. Channelview District reports 2,689 students enrolled this week, up from 2,491 last year. A jury indictment against District Frank Briscoe was dismissed by Judge D. The Wood of Georgetown. Briscoe and top aide Sam Robertson were implicated in a perjury inquiry that also involved police Captain Sean Colley. The indictments were voted last month.
Police report a rash of midweek burglaries across Baytein area. Items stolen include $15 in change, six packs of beer, cigarets, $30 worth of whiskey and beer from Jay's Liquor, tools from Robert E. Lee High School auto shop, and $23 from a billiard belt. A home entry attempt occurred on Dale Street with hinges damaged but no entry. Two vehicle crashes resulted in no injuries. Prowlers reported on East Jack and East Hunnicutt. speed complaints on Crow Road.
Citizens National Bank announces the installation of six drive in windows to speed customer service. The plan aims to reduce wait times and improve access for motorists, with new staff and signage to guide customers.
Baytown enrollment reached 11 278 by Wednesday afternoon with many still registering Thursday at Rob ert E Lee High School. A power outage disrupted registration as fuse blew stalling air conditioning. After restoration, totals showed 840 sixth grade 733 twelfth grade at R E Lee and 208 at Carver High. Junior high counts totaled 2 801 with several campuses listed including Horace Mann Baytown Junto Cedar Page. Elementary enrollment stood at 5 968 across Anson Jones Sam Houston Ashbel Smith Travis Bowie La See.
Baytown schools will close for Labor Day along with most businesses. City Hall and post offices will be closed, mail not delivered but placed in boxes. Many retailers plan half day with skeleton crews at Gulf Oil and United Carbon operations. Humble Oil Baytown Refinery and local utilities offices also due closed.

Texas state finances closed fiscal 1964 with a $73 million general fund balance, the largest in 15 years, as general revenue rose on sales and auto taxes. Comptroller Calvert and deputy forecast possible red ink in the current year ending August 31, 1965, despite Gov. Connally predicting $75-80 million left in the fund. Revenue totals reached $1,658,854,022 with total spending near $959,268,000. sales taxes surged by over $24 million and auto sales tax added about $8 million.
