Harris County reports Baytown’s first West Nile Virus positive mosquito pool this year from a trap in the Craigmont area. No city cases yet, but countywide totals include 21 illnesses and three deaths, with 418 positive pools across Harris County and Texas remaining a national hot spot.
San Jacinto Methodist Hospital hosts the Fourth annual Teddy Bear Clinic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Independence Plaza N1 4301 Garth Road. Children bring a teddy bear to simulate hospital admission, with the bear signed in and photographed, then routed through the urgency department to 3 West.
Gasoline prices climbed before Hurricane Isaac as Gulf of Mexico oil output was largely halted ahead of the storm. Refinery issues in the Midwest and West Coast plus higher crude costs drove a roughly 40 cent rise from July through mid August, with Isaac causing a notable five cent one day gain the biggest since 2011. Crude traded around 94 to 97 dollars per barrel for two weeks after a June low.
City offices including City Hall Public Works and Utility Billing will be closed Monday for Labor Day with normal hours resuming Tuesday. Emergency services and residential trash curbside recycling run as usual. Street crews on standby. Parks spray parks Baytown Nature Center and skate parks stay open. Pirates Bay Waterpark open today. Goose Creek CISD calls for volunteers to support the Reach Out Walk on Saturday. From 8:30 a.m. to noon, teams depart Ross S. Sterling High School to encourage dropouts to return and help students stay on track toward graduation. Last year nearly 300 volunteers gathered at Sterling High School to canvas the homes of 262 former students and offer guidance and resources to complete high school.
