Federal Meat Inspection Now Popular
Washington AP The Agriculture Department says its meat inspection stamp grows in prestige as the Wholesome Meat Act of 1967 tightens rules. It extends federal standards to meat sold within states of origin, with states having until late 1971 to upgrade or face federal standards. The 7,000 federal inspectors, many veterinarians, cover slaughtering packing and processing plants and verify live animal health, carcass condition, sanitation, ingredient safety, packaging weights, and labeling through lab tests.
