U S Steel Corp rejects a Johnson administration plea for price restraint and announces a third steel price increase this month. The raise, effective Monday, raises bar prices by 3 to 4 dollars a ton, matching Republic Steel’s move. Bethlehem Steel also hikes its hot rolled bars by 3 dollars per ton. Jerry Lynn Thompson of Baytown has been promoted to sergeant major, one of the youngest in the U S Army. At 32, he received the rank from Lt. Col. Boyd J Wilson at Trinity University San Antonio where he serves as operations sergeant and chief enlisted instructor in ROTC. Thompson began service in 1953, served in Korea and Hawaii, and held key posts in Germany and at Trinity before relocating with his wife Venda and five children to San Antonio. His mother and in‑laws are listed in Channelview and Schilling respectively.
A section of Alexander Drive and Tri City Beach Road will close to through traffic for three days next week due to Missouri Pacific Railroad crossing construction. Alexander Drive closes at 7 am Tuesday between Seventh Street and Glen near St John's Methodist Church. Tri City Beach Road closes at 1 am Wednesday from Texas Avenue to Evergreen Road. Detours route motorists to the Cedar Bayou Bridge area via Evergreen Road to Tri City Beach Road intersection. The closed segment lies past the apartment complex on Tri City Beach Road.
Humble Oil and Refining Co will install antismoke devices on six emergency release Sare stacks at the Baytown Refinery this year as part of air conservation. See Barsalou, refinery operations manager, spoke at the Baytown Chamber of Commerce luncheon, noting the project cost at 3270,000 and that two burner tips already installed should allow completion of the remaining four by November. The effort, plus a 420,000 addition to the waste water quality system, brings 1967 Baytown air and water conservation expenditures by Humble and Enjay to 700,000. Barsalou traced the program from early standards to present investments and discussed remaining nonproblems like steam and water vapors.
