Tenneco Chemical of Houston contests Texas and New Orleans Railroad authority to condemn about 13 acres of Tenneco property for relocating tracks. A delay risks canceling the freeway by the State Highway Department. T&NO proposes using Port Terminal facilities to reduce land needs to about three acres, but the plan is deemed unworkable. Tenneco bought 7.5 acres at $4,500 per acre, with improvements raising costs.
Baytown officials trimmed 30 thousand 58 dollars from the 1961 62 budget during a Wednesday night meeting. The insurance fund and water sewer departments saw major reductions as City Manager LeFevre seeks balance without a proposed water rate increase. Bill Harris, longtime Humble Oi and Refining Co. Baytown official, leaves a 24 year Baytown tenure to join Humble's Southeast Division in New Orleans as purchasing and traffic manager. A mechanical engineering graduate and WWII Army Corps of Engineers veteran, Harris held roles from trainee to assistant superintendent of maintenance and construction at Baytown Refinery since 1949. He and wife reside on Bayshore Drive with two children, Bob and Louann. Harris was active in Baytown civic groups including the YMCA Board, Rotary, and Chamber committees.
The Gage children, four siblings of Mr. and Mrs. T. Gage of 90 Marion, attend four different schools this term. David, the eldest, recently earned a UT degree and teaches there while continuing law studies. Shan graduates from Robert Boote’s near year, Horace plans to attend Mar town, and Martona, the youngest, enters Latwat Elementary Tuesday as a new student.
